Calgary-West MLA Ken Hughes has officially entered the Alberta PC leadership race and says he is prepared to make the difficult decisions that come with the job.

Hughes announced his intentions to replace Alison Redford at the helm of the PC party on Friday morning in Calgary.

“You know folks there’s a lot of talk today about the Alberta PC Party losing its way.  I’m here to tell you that our job is not nearly done and I am the right person to lead this party into a bright future for all Alberta,” said Hughes.

Hughes says he intends to harness the experience and depth of the party to build his team.

“My leadership will be marked by building a strong team and allowing the deep talent pool in the Alberta PC caucus and the PC party to have a strong voice in what we do and how we do it. My leadership will be about trust,” said Hughes.

Hughes is the first to officially announce his intentions to run for the top job but several more candidates are expected to throw their hats in the ring in coming months.

"As I launch my campaign today, you have my word that you will be able to invest trust in the financial decisions made by your government. Our province deserves a great future and the Hughes team will dedicate its efforts to delivering on that promise," said Hughes. "I have not shied away from difficult challenges and difficult issues."

Hughes is in his first term as an MLA and was elected in April 2012.

He says his platform is based on a “no nonsense” approach. “Albertans have the right to expect solid services, delivered efficiently, and based on no nonsense and prudent spending priorities and this is what my team will deliver.”

Hughes was the Minister of Energy and Municipal Affairs and was previously the chair of the Alberta Health Services board.
