The City of Calgary had some good news for Calgary residents Friday morning, announcing that their Enmax bill may get a bit lower in 2025.

The city issued a media release announcing that the Alberta Utilities Commission has approved a new franchise agreement between the city and Enmax in order to “bring more affordable and predictable electricity bills to Calgarians.”

Starting Jan.1, the electricity franchise fee (aka Local Access Fee) will be calculated on a fixed rate of .015507 per kilowatt hour.

This will be a change from years past, when the Local Access Fee varied according to the price of electricity.

According to the city’s calculations, the change is expected drop its average customer’s franchise fee by 30 per cent, decreasing the monthly charge from $11.24 to $7.91.

In response to a query from CTV News, the city issued the following statement as to who the new fee impacts.

“Alberta's electricity market allows for customers to purchase power from an energy retailer of their choice which is then distributed by Enmax within Calgary (as they own and operate the network to get power to Calgarians).

“This means that for any customer within the City of Calgary, regardless of energy retailer (utility company), this new franchise fee rate will apply. Please note that this applies to only electricity; this does not affect the current natural gas franchise fee.”
