Police are investigating a fire at a residence in a community east of Linden after firefighters found human remains inside.

Beiseker RCMP, Carbon Fire Department, Linden Fire Department and Kneehill County Municipal Enforcement responded to the structure fire in Swalwell on Monday morning.

The remains were found inside once the fire was out and have not yet been identified.

“It was a residence structure fire. Efforts were made to put out the fire and evaluate whether there was anyone inside, unfortunately when the fire was put out, one human was found inside deceased,” said RCMP Constable Jason Curtis.

The cause of the fire is also under investigation.

RCMP say it is early in the investigation but so far there is nothing to indicate foul play.

“Nothing indicating it but at the same time, anytime there’s a death we treat it as suspicious until we investigate and prove otherwise,” said Constable Curtis.

Curtis says as far as they know only one person lived at the residence but it is unclear whether it is the deceased.

Swalwell is a small hamlet in southern Alberta and is located northeast of Calgary.
