The Village of Beiseker is getting hit with overland flooding and has declared a state of emergency but the amount of flooding depends on where you are.

The village’s council is encouraging homeowners to monitor their basements and sump pumps on a regular basis and to avoid drainage ditches and flooded roadways.

The mayor says just a little more than 15 residents have been displaced by the flooding.

Crews are trying their best to divert  water away from the village and protect homes but some homes have been damaged.

"We were called to assist the town of Beiskeer to try to move some overland flooding," says District Chief Dax Huba with rocky View County Fire Services. "We protected most of the homes and structures as best we could and now we're focusing on the sewer system. We've got some manhole covers that are underwater which is taxing their sewer system."

Nikki King says about 20 centimetres of water flooded into her basement Monday and she spent most of Tuesday pumping it out.

"It's all sewer water," says King. "My kids have all moved out now but all their personal belongings. their childhood mementos things like that were all down there."

King says her garage has flooded in the past but this is the first time her house has flooded and isn't sure if she'll have to leave her home for a while.

"I don't know where we're going to go. Our hot water tank doesn't work and the toilets aren't flushing properly. I haven't got that far yet," says King.

Officials are asking residents to regularly check their basements and sump pumps.

The Red Cross has established a reception centre at the Beiseker Community Hall to provide residents impacted by the flood with assistance and information.
