A southern Alberta nurse jumped in to help other health care professionals during the floods and is our Inspiring Albertan this week.

When flood waters rushed into the High River Hospital on June 20th, many of the staff had to help evacuate patients and couldn't look after their own needs.

“A lot of people had left their homes with nothing except what they were wearing and hadn't even thought about grabbing scrubs or toiletries or any of the essentials. So on the Wednesday morning, we started to receive donations literally that quickly after a Facebook page was activated,” said Samantha Tattersall.

Tattersall is a registered nurse at the new South Calgary Campus but she used to work at the High River Hospital.

When she heard what was happening to her former co-workers she wanted to help so she put out the word and within days her basement in Okotoks was stocked with supplies.

“Initially we were worried like, well how are we gonna get all these donations? We have to get the word out and collect items and then before we knew it we had mountains of items that we were sorting,” said Dana Wagner.

One of the first people to take advantage of the make-shift store was Christa Patzer.

Patzer had to go to work in Calgary and was not able to pick up a set of scrubs from her home.

“To be able to shop in a place where, nice and quiet and comfortable, can take as much time as I wanted to, it was really amazing and most of all to be able to have the emotional support to of amazing friends and family from the High River Hospital,” said Patzer.

The store has everything a healthcare worker could need, from uniforms to toiletries and even clothes and basic supplies for their children and family members.

Tattersall says it's a team effort but those who come to the store in her basement say she deserves the lion’s share of credit.

“I marvel at her actually. I mean I’m so thankful for Sam and what she's done for us. It’s been a light where there hasn't been a light for a while,” said Beth Birch.

For giving back to her fellow healthcare workers, Samantha Tattersall is our Inspiring Albertan this week.
