Police say a man who allegedly scammed an elderly couple turned himself in Tuesday morning.

They issued a warrant for the arrest of 38-year-old Richard William Hoffman after they say he nearly scammed an elderly couple out of their home.

Police say the couple received several unsolicited phone calls from someone offering them a loan against their house.

They eventually agreed and signed papers they thought were for a reverse mortgage.

"In June 2007, the couple attended a lawyer's office and signed documents that unbeknownst to them pledged their home to the suspect. The victims believed they were signing papers for a reverse mortgage. In reality, the papers did not reflect a reverse mortgage nor did it give the couple any rights to remain in their home. The suspect has started to foreclose on the house," said CPS Cst. Karen Moffatt.

The foreclosure on the couple's home was halted after police became involved.

On Tuesday at 11 a.m., Hoffman turned himself in to police. He had been wanted on warrants under Section 161 (Part 6 (2)(B)) of the Fair Trading Act of Alberta with unfair practices and under Section 347 of the Criminal Code with criminal interest rate.

They don't know if anyone else has been a victim of the same fraud.
