A bail hearing for a Calgary man accused of torturing a dog and a cat earlier this year has been adjourned until next week.

Nicolino Ivano Camardi, 19, was charged in May with two counts of wilfully causing unnecessary pain, suffering or injury to an animal.

The Calgary Humane Society began its investigation in January when a Siberian husky was found starved to death in an alley in the 200 block of 99 Ave. S.E., with tape wrapped around its muzzle.

A black and white domestic short haired cat was found in a similar state in the same area about a week later.

Humane investigators determined that the animals were sourced off of Kijiji by the accused and were obtained about two to three months before the animals were found dead.

Both animals were taken to a local veterinarian where it was determined that the dog died of starvation and had been chronically malnourished.

The cat died of asphyxia and strangulation and also suffered multiple traumatic injuries to the head, tail, and hind limbs.

Camardi is in custody and his hearing will resume on Tuesday.
