Zoo officials say that there is a new addition to the TransAlta Rainforest as Kioja, the zoo's 15-year-old Western lowland gorilla, gave birth Wednesday evening.

Officials notified the media of the birth on Thursday, saying that this new baby is the first born at the zoo since 2008, when Yewande was born.

The father of the infant is 37-year-old silverback Kakinga.

Officials say that keepers are watching the troop carefully, looking for all signs of nursing and bonding between mom and baby.

The TransAlta Rainforest building will remain closed for the time being.
