Calgary’s catholic school board has decided to cancel trips out of the country for the rest of the school year because of recent global events and says the safety of students and staff is a priority.

At the end of November, the Calgary Board of Education asked its schools to postpone planning for upcoming international trips so it could gather feedback from students, parents and staff.

On Monday, Calgary Catholic announced that it had re-evaluated international travel and, after discussing the matter with its key members, decided to shelve international travel for the remainder of the 2015-2016 school year.

At the forefront of this decision was the safety of our students and our staff. While we believe in the educational value of international travel, we have an obligation to ensure a safe and caring environment. Due to fluctuating travel advisories and unknowns, we cannot risk the health and well-being of our students and staff.

We acknowledge the challenges that will arise as a result of this decision and will work with our schools to minimize the impact on students and their families that are directly affected. This was a difficult decision to make and we thank you for your support and understanding.

Officials say they will review the decision next fall.
