Officials say alleged gangster Jackie Tran is now safely in Vietnam and isn't likely to return.

Canada Border Service Agency confirmed Friday that Tran is now back in his native country.

Tran was flown out of Calgary Tuesday night and arrived in Hanoi Wednesday night.

His deportation ends a six year long legal battle to stay in the country.

Officials say that while there is a provision in the Immigration Act to allow a deported person to return to Canada, the decision must be made by the immigration minister.

It is unlikely the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration would allow Tran to return.

In a written statement, Minister Jason Kenney says "The removal of inadmissible individuals, particularly violent foreign criminals such as Tran, is key to maintaining the integrity of the Canada's immigration system and to protecting those who live in this country lawfully."

It is believed Tran is staying with family members in Vietnam.
