A teenage girl convicted of killing her family will be allowed out of her secure facility.

The girl, who can't be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was 12-years-old at the time of the murders.

She is now 16 and has been serving a four year sentence at a psychiatric hospital.

Monday, a judge ordered her custody be changed from closed to open.

That means the teen can now leave the facility under supervision.

All trips outside of the hospital must be approved by the Solicitor General.

Court heard from Dr. Vinesh Gupta who testified that the girl may never realize the impact of her actions.

"In some ways, we believe we will not be able to achieve that goal in its entirety. It's an on-going process not likely to be achieved before discharge."

Prosecutors say they have confidence in the treatment the girl is receiving.

Jeremy Steinke was also found guilty of the murders. He is serving a life sentence in prison.
