On Saturday, more than 200 people took part in the 5-kilometre "Out of the Darkness Memorial Walk" at the Calgary Zoo to remember loved ones who have committed suicide.

"There is still a stigma attached to suicide, so it's really nice that these individuals are able to come out and feel that they can talk and grieve about their losses," said Laura Therrian with the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA).

Many people wore the names of loved ones who died by taking their own lives.

The CMHA says this year approximately 450 Albertans will commit suicide and that suicide rates have triples since the 1960's.

Saturday also marks "Survivors of Suicide Day" with the word "survivor" used to describe someone who has been impacted by a suicide.

The CMHA says suicide affects 6-10 people, which is around 4,000 Albertans every year.
