The parents of students who attend William Aberhart High School in northwest Calgary have been warned about a possible threat that a student may be planning to bring a firearm to school.
Officials notified parents in a letter that a possible threat had been discovered during a review of anonymous student surveys completed at the end of the year.
In the document, the student wrote that a firearm would be brought to the school before the end of June.
Officials are trying to confirm the validity of the threat and have contacted police to investigate.
Calgary police are trying to identify the student who wrote the note to determine if there is any truth to the claim or if it is just a prank.
The Calgary Board of Education says exams and classes will continue as scheduled.
In the meantime, officials at William Aberhart advise parents and students to keep a close eye on social media and watch for any more information on any possible threats.
News of this threat comes just over a week after a Cochrane teen was charged in connection with a similar threat made against a high school in the community west of Calgary.
The 15-year-old boy, who cannot be named, posted a picture of himself on June 4 with some ammunition on Snapchat along with the message, “Don’t go to school on Monday”.
The RCMP charged the youth with one count of uttering threats.
He is expected to make his first appearance in a Cochrane court on Tuesday.
