Skier seriously injured in avalanche near Revelstoke, B.C.
A skier was seriously injured after an avalanche near Revelstoke, B.C., over the weekend.
The incident occurred on Sunday around 1 p.m., according to Avalanche Canada, at Highway Bowl, a backcountry skiing area near Revelstoke Mountain Resort.
The skier was looking out over the bowl when he walked out onto a cornice, which failed below his skis.
He was unable to hold on and then fell into Highway Bowl.
The cornice failure triggered a size-three slab avalanche.
Avalanche Canada said the skier was seriously injured and evacuated with help from Revelstoke Mountain Resort Ski Patrol and Revelstoke Search and Rescue.
There were nine people in total in the group at Highway Bowl, but the injured skier was the only one affected.
Avalanche Canada says conditions are relatively stable throughout much of B.C. and Alberta at the moment.
“All the regions have some uncertainty surrounding buried weak layers, which is often where the big avalanches you get those. At the moment, there's been a little bit around the Revelstoke area, it has kind of been the most active over the last week. Otherwise, it's pretty quiet,” said Ian Snowsell, a forecaster with Avalanche Canada.
