A man was found collapsed outside a restaurant in the city's northwest and Calgary police say they are treating his death as suspicious.
Emergency crews were called to a Humpty's restaurant in the 1600 block of 46 Street N.W. at about 6:45 a.m. Thursday after a man was found dead on the sidewalk outside.
Police believe the man to be in his 40s or 50s and have called in the Homicide Unit to lead the investigation.
“Medical Examiner attended and confirmed suspicious death therefore Homicide Unit has been engaged. At his point the male’s identity is not confirmed,” said CPS S/Sgt Jason Bobrowich.
Police are awaiting the results of an autopsy to determine the cause of death and say that it will be conducted on Friday morning.
“We’re right in the beginning of the initial stages of the investigation. To conduct a thorough investigation it takes time to process the scene particularly when this is basically a business plus a public accessed area, outdoors, so we have to work within the confines of the weather and the resources that we can put into place,” said S/Sgt Bobrowich.
He says he is not aware of any witnesses at this time but police are asking anyone who may have seen something to contact them.
“Obviously the homicide investigators want to be able to conduct a scene examine, that includes not only the immediate scene where the deceased person was found but also neighbouring areas such as businesses, other areas, witnesses in the area that might have seen something or might have captured something on video in the area.”
