For 11 years, Robyn Regehr played with the Calgary Flames, and now he's come home to retire.

Regehr made the official announcement of his resignation on Monday at the Saddledome.

"I put a lot of time and effort into the team when I was here, and it's a nice way to celebrate that," he said during a press conference.

He thanked his family, including his father and mother and his wife and children. "Without them, i wouldn't have had the opportunity to go on a tremendous journey without their commitment and sacrifice."

Regehr also thanked the team and the ownership group. "The ownership group made a huge impression on me as a person. I can still remember coming here to Calgary and dealing with tremendous people."

The 35-year-old, from Rosthern, SK, played for the Calgary Flames for 11 years before being traded to the Buffalo Sabres and then the Los Angeles Kings.

He won a Cup with Los Angeles in 2014, but is thrilled to retire as a Flame.

He also played for Canada in the 2006 Olympic Games.
