Former Stampeder Joffrey Reynolds has been released from custody after border services officers picked him up for being in the country illegally.
Reynolds was led into an immigration hearing in handcuffs and shackles after he was arrested on the weekend on charges allegedly related to a former girlfriend.
Police were called to an apartment in Eau Claire around 4:00 a.m. on Saturday after a woman returned to her residence and found that a man had broken in.
The man allegedly confronted and physically assaulted the woman. She was able to flee the home and call police.
Police arrested the man who was still in the residence when they arrived.
Reynolds, 32, was charged with one count each of break and enter and assault causing bodily harm.
The immigration hearing officer said that Reynolds was in deep financial trouble and would probably not appear for removal if he was released but the adjudicator disagreed saying he was not a flight risk.
Reynolds must abide by a number of conditions and must give a permanent address to Canada Border Services and report in twice per month.
The all time rushing leader also faces charges stemming from an alleged assault and break and enter that took place early Saturday morning.
Reynolds is a four-time CFL all-star and was a key component of the Stampeders 2008 Grey Cup win.
He was released from the club last year but wasn’t picked up by any other team.
Reynolds is expected back in Provincial Court to face the criminal charges on July 26.
