STARS unveiled its newest helicopter on Thursday and say the $16 M machine will enhance the team’s ability to respond to medical emergencies around the province.
The AW139 was purchased through donations and is one of two new choppers in the STARS’ arsenal.
The other chopper was delivered to Edmonton in December 2012 and together the two birds cost about $26.5 M.
The new helicopters have a larger interior, more lift capacity and a de-icing system that will enable them to fly in adverse weather conditions.
The crew will consist of a pilot, co-pilot, ICU nurse and a paramedic, just like all the other choppers.
Last year, STARS responded to more than 1500 calls from its three bases in Alberta.
The new helicopter and its crew will be ready to go by early next year.
