The Calgary Police Service confirms three men are in police custody in connection with the ongoing investigation into Friday morning’s suspicious death in Forest Lawn.

Shortly before 5:00 a.m. Friday, officers entered a home in the 2400 block of 47 Street Southeast following reports of gunshots and discovered the lifeless body of a man in his 20s.

Witness reports indicated several men fled the scene in a sedan.

Family members have identified the deceased as 23-year-old Abiem Akel, a member of Calgary’s South Sudanese community.

A police investigation into the suspicious death led officers to a residential building in the northeast neighbourhood of Taradale on Friday. Following a lengthy police standoff in the building in the 300 block of Taralake Way N.E., three suspects were apprehended.

The unnamed men are considered persons of interest in connection with the death and have not been formally charged.
