CALGARY – A frightening moment on the ice brought the Flames practice to a halt Thursday afternoon at the Scotiabank Saddledome and saw defenceman TJ Brodie carried off on a stretcher.
Panic immediately hit the rink when Brodie collapsed and began convulsing, with players calling for a doctor. Athletic therapists James Borreli and Mike Gudmundson got to Brodie first and stabilized the Flames defenceman.
The 'Dome went silent as shaken teammates looked on.
Travis Hamonic was at Brodie’s side saying a prayer. Brodie lay on the ice for about about 15 minutes. He was responsive and taken off the ice on a stretcher and transported to hospital.
The team sent out a statement on Thursday evening, saying the 29-year-old was discharged this afternoon and is now at home.
"TJ Brodie experienced an episode on-ice at practice today in Calgary. Following tests conducted at a local hospital, TJ has been discharged and is doing well in recovery at home with his family."
The Flames are expected to give an update on Friday morning
