The Calgary Fire Department is at the scene of a two alarm house fire in the northwest community of Kincora.
The fire broke out just before 4:30 a.m. at a home in the 100 block of Kincora Drive N.W.
The blaze also spread to a second home.
Battalion Chief Stu Laird says they did all they could to keep the fire from spreading. "What the crews did on arrival was protect the exposures, just to make sure we contained the fire at first. The next thing was to get water on it as quickly as possible, we also included a tactic called 'pressurization' where we pressurize the surrounding homes, pumping a lot of air into them to make sure the smoke doesn't get into those structures."
All of the residents safely got out of the affected homes and officials say the fire is under control.
Residents in the area say they were woken up by yelling.
"I was at home sleeping and I hear my next door neighbour yelling something and I really couldn't make it out. I peered out the window and my wife overhead them talking on the phone on 911, saying 'our house was on fire'. Just like that, we got the kids and bolted for the door," said Nick Loui.
Loui says that he praises God that everyone is safe in his family along with the rest of his neighbours.
Fire officials say it is still too early to tell how the fire started.
They are also reminding residents to make sure they stay out of homes on fire. In this incident, fire investigators learned that one of the occupants re-entered the home to retrieve a personal item.
They had to be treated for smoke inhalation and are now in hospital.
Officials warn against this sort of behaviour because fire can spread very quickly. Families typically have about three minutes to get out of the home safely once it is on fire.
