ATCO wants to replace aging pipelines in Calgary and is planning to pass on the cost to its users.

Pipelines, like the ones underneath 90 Ave. and 14 St. S.W., are over 50 years old and have reached the end of their life.

When the pipelines were built they were outside the city limits but currently they run along roads, through parks and near playgrounds.

The cost of replacing the lines is estimated at $700 million.

ATCO plans to charge consumers more to pay for it, saying the lines are a safety concern.

“The existing pipelines are located near homes and businesses,” says Brendan Dolan, ATCO Pipelines vice-president.  “Now that the city has overgrown the pipeline over the last 60 years, this creates a public safety risk with high pressure pipelines within densely populated communities within the city.”

ATCO claims the average residential customer will see their bill jump by two dollars a month once the project is complete.
