The victim in Wednesday's shooting at a southeast business has died in hospital and the Homicide Unit is now investigating.

Officers were called to a business in the 10300 block of Bonaventure Dr. S.E. at about 10:45 a.m.

One person was taken from the scene to hospital with extensive injuries and later died.

Police say the shooting does not appear to be random and detectives are now looking through CCTV footage and interviewing witnesses.

“We had a number of patrons frequenting the businesses in the area so we do have a number of witnesses, over a dozen witnesses that we’ve been able to contact and interview and at this point, witnesses are cooperating,” said CPsSDuty Insp. Michael Watterston.

Matt Smith was in the area at the time and described what he saw to CTV News.

“You see the cops and rifles go in and so I was like, well let’s take a peek so we kept watching in between the two buildings, the brick one here, and you see a stretcher come in the main part and then come out with a body on it and they’re pumping air and then they took off like a bat out of hell going this way,” said Smith.

He says he has lived in the area for 12 years and never seen anything like it.

Two schools in the area were locked down as a precaution but were released once officers cleared the scene.

“At the time of the incident we took the precautionary measure to lock down those schools as part of our procedures whenever we have these types of incidents,” said Watterston.

Police secured the area and say some nearby roads will experience traffic delays while they investigate.

They are asking drivers to avoid the area around the intersection of 99 Avenue and Bonaventure Dr. S.E.

Parking lots in the area are also closed to traffic.

The victim has not been identified and police are working to determine what led up to the shooting.

"Very early in the investigation, once we are able to confirm the identity and understand what the individual was doing there, we'll have a better idea," said Watterston.
