Hundreds of people gathered in the Eau Claire Market on Saturday afternoon for the kickoff of a fundraiser walk raising dollars and awareness for agencies that assist Calgary’s homeless.

An estimated crowd of nearly 600 walkers will make its way along the Bow River Pathway on Saturday night for the annual Coldest Night of the Year walk to support the approximately 3,000 homeless in Calgary and the agencies that support them.

Saturday’s walk raises funds for Acadia Place, Feed the Hungry and the Mustard Seed.

The 2016 walk has raised more than $116,000 for Calgary’s impoverished.

Calgary is one of 91 Canadian communities hosting a Coldest Night of the Year event Saturday. The temperature during the event, which runs from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. is expected to remain above the freezing mark.
