The first round of the NHL Entry Draft takes place Friday night in Buffalo and many sports fans are watching Brad Treliving to see what he’ll do with the Flames’ sixth overall pick.
There is no telling what the GM will do and he didn’t tip his hand at all when he spoke to the media on Thursday, other than saying the team will be using the pick to secure the best player available.
Whether that player is in the draft list or somewhere else is anyone’s guess.
One of the big needs for the team is a solid backstop and Treliving says that that sixth pick could be used to secure a veteran goaltender from another team, but the deal would have to be significant.
“Yeah, there’s always the opportunity. I’d say right now, if you had a crystal ball, we’ll be picking at six, but we’ve got some time before the draft. We’ll see how that goes,” Treliving says.
He says the team is comfortable with a sixth overall pick in this year’s draft and isn’t hasty to trade it away. “Just to move it to move it, we’re not interested in that, but we’re open and looking at all options.”
The Flames have 10 picks in the top 100 this weekend.
The first round picks will be announced starting at 5:00 p.m.
The team has chosen sixth overall five times before, most recently coming back with Sean Monahan.
Some Calgary Hitmen will also be in the spotlight for the 2016 Entry Draft, with six players making Central Scouting’s draft rankings and could be taken.
