Calgarians who suffered property damage in recent flooding are able to apply for disaster financial assistance from the province of Alberta.

“We have made changes to the Disaster Recovery Program because of these extraordinary circumstances,” says Minister Ric McIver. “These changes have shaved weeks off the normal process, and this means we are beginning face-to-face conversations with, and providing financial support to, affected Albertans within days, not months, of the floods.”

The funding is to be used to repair or rebuild damage homes and other uninsurable property damage.

Flood victims are asked to apply for the assistance in person at one of two locations:

  • Red and White Club at McMahon Stadium – 1833 Crowchild Trail N.W.
  • Roderick Mah Centre for Continuous Learning (Mount Royal University) – 4825 Mount Royal Gate S.W.

The locations are open:

  • July 2          10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
  • July 3 – 7     8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.

The provincial government will not require visual inspections of the damaged homes and, contrary to previous policy, municipalities will not have to apply on behalf of the victim.  Property inspections will be addressed at a later date.

Initial payments will be sent by mail within seven to fourteen days from the application date.  The amount of the payment will be determined by:

  • The size of the home (approx. square footage required)
  • The number of rooms
  • Whether the basement was finished
  • Additional details the applicant provides including insurance company correspondence outlining flood losses

Tenants are eligible to receive financial assistance if they provide the following:

  • Proof their residence was in a flood affected area
  • Government issued identification
