He’s danced his way into the hearts of Olympic visitors in London and Vancouver but Russian officials have said ‘nyet’ to the antics of spandex clad street dancer, and Red Deer native, Spandy Andy.
The YouTube sensation, who has legally changed his name to Spandy Andy, had hoped to bring his unique performances to the Sochi Winter Games but officers at the Russian embassy didn’t crack a smile when he submitted his visa application.
Spandy Andy believes his colourful act and personality rubbed officials the wrong way.
“That had a bit to do with it because I’m very outgoing, I’m a flamboyant person,” said Spandy Andy. “I think they might be looking for that and trying to stop that for the Olympics.”
The street dancing artist likely faced an uphill battle from the start. Spandy Andy wore a rainbow shirt when submitting his visa application and admits his act may violate Russia’s controversial anti-gay laws.
Tens of millions of people have viewed Spandy Andy’s YouTube videos and his antics were greeted with smiles and laughter during the Vancouver and London Olympics.
Spandy Andy says Russia’s decision will not deter his love for the Olympics. The dancer plans to take his act to the 2016 Rio Olympics where he expects the Brazilian government to be more accepting of his performances.
