“Eddie the Eagle” movie profiles the beloved underdog ski jumper who shot to fame during the 1988 Olympics.
The new movie tells the story of Michael Edwards, who was the first person from Britain to compete in Olympic ski jumping. He became known as Eddie the Eagle due to his awkward jumping style, which often ended in crashes. He became a hero for his dogged determination despite being poorly trained and outfitted.
While the event took place in Calgary, you won't see any recent shots of Canada Olympic Park. That's because COP, where Eddie became famous, is portrayed by using historical footage of the event.
In an email, screenwriter Sean Macaulay said they wanted to shoot the movie in Calgary but could not due to logistical issues. Oberstdorf, Germany was used as a stand-in location for Calgary to shoot new scenes, even though it looks quite different from COP. Other scenes representing Garmisch, Germany were shot on location there.
“Eddie the Eagle” opens in theatres on February 26, 2016.
