The around-the-clock effort to combat human trafficking in Alberta has been bolstered by additional provincial funding.

“(We're here) to ensure that this $5.5 million in funding is allocated to community-based organizations fostering a consistent coordinated response to human trafficking in Alberta,” said Canadian country star and antitrafficking advocate Paul Brandt Friday.

Brandt joined provincial Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services Mike Ellis and Searle Turton, Alberta’s minister of children and family services, on Friday to launch the Combatting Trafficking in Persons grant program.

It focuses on three key areas: prevention, protection and empowerment.

The province says human trafficking is especially prevalent in Indigenous communities.

Local organizatons that work to fight human trafficking and support victims can apply for the $5.5 million available grants until Jan. 20.
