Burt’s Store has been a mainstay in the community of Windsor Park for more than 60 years but will soon be a thing of the past as a new development is planned for the site.

The store at the corner of 50th Avenue and Elbow Drive S.W. has been owned by many over the years and has created special memories for many area residents.

Doug Parkin, 85, has lived in the area for years and used to take his children to the community confectionary for ice cream

“Long memories. The store was here when I moved into the district back in 71 and it’s been a good store. When you want to pick up the odd item, it’s always here” said Parkin.

The little store has it all, from lint removers to propane, people can pick up almost anything at Burt’s.

Younku Lee owns the store now and says a lot of long-time customers come in to talk about the old days.

“I was a baby, I came here 50 years ago,” said Lee. “They want to keep the old store. Lots of memories.”

The store’s days are numbers as a new development will soon be going up in its place.

“Burt’s has been a landmark in the neighbourhood for a long, long time so I have a nine-year-old son and every time we walk by this store, he gets a little sad about that,” said Kevin Maloney.

It is expected the store will fall sometime in the new year and with it, a little piece of Calgary history.
