Large piles of unsorted recyclables proved to be fuel for an afternoon fire at a business near the intersection of 103 Ave. and 46 St. S.E.
Fire crews responded to the recycling plant shortly after noon on Saturday following reports of smoke and charred items. CFD members located smouldering piles of materials destined for recycling. The unsorted piles contained an array of items including plastic, paper, and cardboard.
Employees used front end loaders to transport the burning items out of the building and firefighters doused the materials with water.
The fire was successfully controlled. All staff vacated the premises and no injuries have been reported.
It is not known how long the recycling piles had been smouldering before an employee noticed and placed a 911 call.
A decision on whether the damaged material will be recycled or transported to a landfill has not been made.
Crews will remain at the scene to monitor hotspots and air quality.
