Members of the Calgary Fire Department extinguished two early morning fires in close proximity to one another in the northeast community of Whitehorn.

Fire crews responded to a 2:00 a.m. call in the 100 block of Whitmere Rd. N.E. On arrival, firefighters encountered and successfully doused a fire in the backyard of a vacant home.

While crews put out the initial blaze, a second fire was reported in an alleyway a block from the original call's location.

Firefighters were deployed to the second scene where they discovered a burning, discarded mattress in the back lane. The mattress fire was extinguished before it could spread to nearby fences and homes.

An investigation into both fires is underway.
