It was another night of muddy racing at the GMC Rangeland Derby as the top four wagons competed in the finals for the $100,000 Dash for Cash.
Kirk Sutherland, Jason Glass, Vern Nolin and Mitch Sutherland raced their chuckwagons through the muck for the final race and in the end, the senior Sutherland took home the top prize.
It was the first time Kirk Sutherland has won the chuckwagon finals at the Stampede and his son Mitch finished in second place.
Sutherland also posted the night’s fastest time at 1:16.74 and he received the Stampede’s Safe Driver Award for the third time in his career for being the least penalized driver over the first eight nights.
Sunday was also the final day of the rodeo. Here’s a look at the event winners:
- Tie Down Roping - Shane Hanchey
- Steer Wrestling – Seth Brockman
- Bareback – Steven Peebles
- Saddlebronc – Zeke Thurston
- Bull Riding – Cody Teel
- Barrel Racing – Mary Burger
It was a busy day at the Stampede grounds on the final day as officials offered free admission on Sunday morning to bring people in and about 65,000 people took advantage of the offer between 10:00 a.m. and noon.
The Stampede also slashed entry fees on Thursday and Friday to help attendance numbers and officials say about 936,000 people went through the turnstiles in nine days.
It is hoped that the final tally will be over 1 million visitors and the official number should be available sometime on Monday.
