A Calgary judge has denied a bail application for a man accused of torturing a dog and a cat earlier this year.

Nicolino Ivano Camardi, 19, is charged with two counts of wilfully causing unnecessary pain, suffering or injury to an animal.

The charges stem from a Calgary Humane Society investigation that began after a Siberian husky was found starved to death with its muzzle wrapped with tape in an alleyway in the city’s southeast in January.

A cat was found a few days later in the same area and vets determined that it had died of asphyxia and strangulation.

Camardi has been in custody since his arrest and will remain there until his case goes to trial.

If found guilty, he could face up to ten years in prison.
