A deal worth an estimated $1.6 billion has Shaw Communications expanding its telecommunications reach and staking its place amongst Canada's mobile carriers.
On Wednesday afternoon, the communications and media company announced its plans to purchase 100% of Mid-Bowline Group Corporation and its subsidiary WIND Mobile Corp.
“The time has come to offer even more mobility to our customers,” said Brad Shaw, CEO of Shaw Communications Inc. “By acquiring WIND, we not have immediate scale, spectrum, retail distribution and a network with a clear path to LTE that complements our existing fibre and WiFI infrastructure.”
According to SHAW Communications, WIND Mobile currently serves roughly 940,000 customers in Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario.
Shaw is presently the only major media company in Canada without a wireless provider.
The buyout requires the approval of the Competition Bureau, the Ministry of Innovation, Science & Economic Development and court approval.
