Officials in the town of Sundre want people to know it is business as usual after many were worried about the impact of a pipeline rupture nearby.

A lot of people mistakenly thought the pipeline rupture that happened in June along a stretch of the Red Deer River affected the town.

The rupture was actually close to ten kilometres downstream and had no affect on Sundre or the section of river running through it.

The mistaken perception is costing local businesses.

“People phoning wondering if you could use the river. People wondering what damage was done. I had people phoning wondering if they should continue with their plans,” said David Todd from Otter Rafting Adventures.

“We still have great recreation property people can go camping and whitewater rafting and hiking all around the area and still be miles away from where the rupture happened,” said Gord Moore of the Sundre Chamber of Commerce.

Water tested by Alberta Environment, downstream from the pipeline rupture, falls within Alberta's safety standards.
