Sentencing arguments for one of the men convicted of killing a Calgary businessman in his downtown office were heard in a Calgary court on Tuesday.
Mohamed Karim and Robert Deer were both accused in the homicide of Morbank Financial President, Jack Beauchamp back in 2006.
Karim admitted that he went to Beauchamp’s offices on January 16, bringing a loaded 22 calibre weapon with him.
He said he only wanted to scare Beauchamp in order to get Morbank to back off in a business dispute with his associate Robert Deer.
During the trial the prosecution claimed that the shooting was a murder-for-hire.
Both men were originally convicted of first-degree murder in the case but were granted a new trial by the Alberta Court of Appeal.
Queen’s Bench Justice Beth Hughes found Karim guilty of second-degree murder and Deer guilty of manslaughter in the second trial.
Court also heard victim impact statements from members of Jack Beauchamp's family on Tuesday.
Beauchamp’s wife Debra choked back tears as she described a conversation the couple had the night before the murder.
"We made plans for a special vacation in September of 2006. It was a wonderful day, if only we knew what was coming," she told the court.
A new date for sentencing will be set on November 2nd.
