The man accused of killing a popular teacher at an Auburn Bay area home in 2013 has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and was in court in Calgary on Monday for the first day of his trial.
Nicholas Rasberry, 32, is accused in the stabbing death of his neighbour, Craig Kelloway on May 4, 2013.
Police were called to a home in the 100 block of Auburn Springs Close S.E. at about 11:30 p.m. for reports of a stabbing.
Kelloway, a teacher at David Thompson Middle School in Calgary, and his girlfriend had recently moved into the community and were socializing with their new neighbours, Nicholas and Kelsey Rasberry.
The two men continued to have drinks and talk alone after the party started to wind down and an altercation occurred that resulted in the death of Kelloway.
Rasberry was charged with second-degree murder and was released on bail with conditions last year.
On Monday, Rasberry pleaded not guilty to the charge and a 911 recording was played for the court.
Rasberry: “There was a guy stabbed multiple times by me.”
Dispatcher: “Is he awake? Is he breathing?”
Rasberry: “Yes, barely.”
Dispatcher: “Okay we do have paramedics on the way. Alright when did this happen?”
Rasberry: “Just like five minutes ago."
Dispatcher: “Okay.”
Rasberry: “Jesus Christ."
In the recording, Rasberry can be heard telling the dispatcher that he stabbed Kelloway for allegedly trying to have sex with him.
Dispatcher: “Okay, is there any serious bleeding?”
Rasberry: “Yeah, all over everywhere. Jesus he tried to f—k me in the a--. I stabbed him everywhere.”
Dispatcher: “Okay sir is there more than one wound?”
Rasberry: “Yes, I stabbed him multiple times”
When paramedics arrived at the home, Kelloway was in critical condition and he died at the scene.
The entire 911 call lasted twelve minutes and at the end of the recording Rasberry can be heard telling officers that he was “attacked” and that he “didn’t do anything wrong”.
The trial continues on Tuesday and is expected to take two weeks.
