The remaining board members and commissioners of Alberta’s new energy regulator were appointed on Wednesday.
In April, Gerry Protti was made Board Chair and Jim Ellis was named the CEO of the new provincial regulator.
The seven remaining board members were appointed on Wednesday along with five full-time hearing commissioners.
The board will be responsible for the governance and general direction of the regulator's business dealings and the commissioners will sit on panels, conduct hearings and make decisions on energy resource project applications, reconsiderations, inquires and appeals.
“With these appointments, we have built a team that will truly usher in a new era of energy regulating for the province,” said Energy Minister Ken Hughes. “This team, led by Board Chair Gerry Protti and CEO Jim Ellis, will ensure our province leads the country, and the world, in balancing resource growth with our strong environmental commitment.”
The board members are:
- Gerry Protti
- Cameron Bailey
- Dr. David Chalack
- Elizabeth Dowdeswell
- Fred Estlin
- Peter C. Flynn
- Sheila O’Brien
- Andy Neigel
The full-time commissioners are:
- Bradley T. McManus
- Alex Bolton
- Rob McManus
- Christine Macken
- Barbara McNeil
The regulator says it will be announcing additional part-time hearing commissioners in the near future and will begin phasing in operations this month.
The Alberta Energy Regulator is responsible for regulating the province’s upstream oil, oil sands, natural gas and coal development.
The agency says it will regulate energy projects thought the entire process, from application and construction to production, abandonment, and reclamation.
