CALGARY -- The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) says it is working on a process to revisit the topic of renaming schools within its district, which would include Langevin School.

Ward 8 and 9 Trustee Richard Hehr aimed to give the school, which is named after Hector-Louis Langevin, a new name and requested a discussion on the school's name be added as an emergent item to the public board agenda for March 9th.

The Board determined that his request was not an emergent item but says it is working to finalize a process and criteria for schools that may be considered for renaming, which would include Langevin School.

“The Board recognizes the significant nature of this work and are approaching this work thoughtfully, while remaining committed to respectful dialogue that honours the traditions of schools and the interests of all concerned stakeholders,” said the CBE in a statement to CTV News Calgary.

“The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) and the CBE Board of Trustees are committed to providing safe, positive, inclusive, equitable and welcoming learning and working environments.”

Langevin, a lawyer from Quebec City, Que., was one of the fathers of Confederation but was also considered by many to be one of the chief architects of Canada's residential school system.

A group of Grade 5 and 8 students who attend the school had approached the CBE's board of trustees earlier this year to plead their case to change the name.

They said that while Langevin himself was long dead, the pain of the residential school system is still affecting the lives of many Indigenous people in Canada.

Approximately four years ago, the City of Calgary officially changed the name of Langevin Bridge to Reconciliation Bridge, in order to facilitate healing in the First Nations community.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi and 13 councillors approved that motion in 2017.

Correction:

A previous version of this story stated that a motion to rename Calgary's Langevin School was defeated during a board meeting on Tuesday, March 9. Trustee Hehr asked that a discussion on the school’s renaming be added as an emergent item. The Board did not consider the matter to be an emergent item and a motion was not made to rename the school at that time.
