Starting Tuesday, you may want to consider a different route if you use the intersection of McKnight Boulevard and Deerfoot Trail as part of your commute in Calgary.

Construction work to replace expansion joints, add watertight joints on both ends of the bridge as well as complete other minor repairs begins Tuesday and, while the work is going on, traffic will be impacted.

Speeds will be limited to 50 km/h through the zone and lanes will be narrowed and reduced in both directions on the bridge.

Semi drivers will also need to avoid the area entirely as the ramps are off limits to large trucks.

Officials expect the delays in the area will likely add half an hour to your commute, depending on volume moving through the area.

The project is the first stage of a larger plan to widen the lanes on McKnight that’s been ongoing for the past year.

The road is planned to go from four lanes to six and is expected to increase capacity by 50 percent.

The total project cost is $17M and the construction is expected to wrap up by the end of September.
