Detectives from the Calgary Police Service are in Mexico working with local authorities as part of the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of Nathan O'Brien and Alvin and Kathy Liknes.
The trio was reported missing from the Liknes’ Parkhill home by family members on Monday June 30.
An AMBER Alert was initiated and police spent weeks searching the home and an acreage near Airdrie for evidence.
Police have not found the bodies of the three but declared them deceased on July 14 after reviewing evidence collected during the course of the investigation.
The Liknes’ had plans to relocate to Mexico before they went missing.
The only suspect in the case, 54-year-old Douglas Garland, faces two counts of first-degree murder and one count of second-degree murder.
Garland was originally arrested on identity theft charges but Crown Prosecutor, Shane Parker, says he has requested those charges be stayed.
“The evidence from the impersonation will be used as part of the murder case so there was no need to have separate proceedings,” said Parker.
Garland remains in police custody and is scheduled to be back in court on August 14, 2014.
