Alberta Health Services has determined a patient recently diagnosed with measles had visited the Calgary Winter Club in January and may have exposed the organization’s members to the disease.
On the afternoon of Thursday, January 30, the patient, a child attends classes at Clear Water Academy, spent nearly six hours at the private athletic club located on 14 St. N.W.
AHS officials notified the Calgary Winter Club of the possibility of airborne exposure, and the club informed its members of the incident.
Any club member who has not previously had, or has not been vaccinated against, measles could potentially develop the disease.
Symptoms of measles include a fever in excess of 38.3 degrees Celsius, a cough, runny nose, red eyes and a red blotchy patch on the patient’s face, behind their ears, and spreading across the body.
Members who require additional information are encouraged to contact the Calgary Winter Club.
Anyone who believes they may have contracted measles is asked to avoid contact with other people and to phone Health Link Alberta 403-943-5465
The child, who is a student in kindergarten or grade one, is the fourth person in the Calgary area to be diagnosed with measles this year.
