One of the city’s most popular talk radio personalities says he has been approached about throwing his name in the race for mayor in the next civic election.
Dave Rutherford says he is thinking it over but has not made a decision yet on whether he will run for the city’s top job.
Rutherford is set to retire from his CHQR radio show on July 26 and says he is a bit surprised that the news leaked out.
"I'm quite surprised at how fast it went. Twitter of course being what it is and facebook and all the other social media sites, it went very quickly," said Rutherford.
He won’t say who approached him but did say he is considering the offer.
"I had a phone call from someone, I'm not going to identify who it was, with interest, wondering if I was interested in running for Mayor. And I didn't rule it out. I've said on the radio program that my show is ending on the 26th of July and my wife, Linda, and I are looking at all options," said Rutherford. "Anything's possible."
Rutherford is a well-known conservative and political experts say name recognition could definitely be a factor for him in the election if he runs.
"I'm going to meet with the principles involved in this thing, I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I'll explore that. There's nothing more definate than that. There's no campaign infrastructure, there's none of that stuff yet. I'm going to explore it. I might as well, no harm in doing that and we'll see where it goes from there,"said Rutherford.
The next civic election is set for October 21, 2013.
