Calgary's new arena will face its final administrative hurdle at city hall on Thursday.

The Calgary Planning Commission will be reviewing the development permit and application for Scotia Place, the city's new arena.

Not only is it one of the final steps before construction can start, but it also provides a closer look at what the finished arena will look like.

While early construction like excavation and shoring was allowed to begin thanks to three earlier approvals, Thursday's application contains the final revisions to the building's design.

The application shows how the arena will fit into the neighbourhood with restaurants and shops along its outer edge.

It also provides technical details like how the rink will be built below grade and how Indigenous elements will be incorporated.

City administration does recommend the planning commission approve the development permit, but it will be subject to 45 conditions.

Those consist of minor construction guidelines like where to place streetlights and how to plant trees.

The review is the last formal process before construction moves ahead on the $1.2-billion project.

Once complete, Scotia Place will have capacity for 18,400 fans.

It's expected to open in fall 2027.
