A crash on Highway 1 has claimed the life of a woman after her SUV left the road, rolled across the median and was struck by an oncoming vehicle.
The crash occurred at approximately 7:00 a.m. Sunday morning on the Trans-Canada Highway, approximately 200 m west of the Valley Ridge Blvd. exit.
According to police, the driver of a Honda SUV was travelling eastbound on Highway 1 when it appears she lost control of her vehicle. The SUV left the eastbound lanes, rolled multiple times in the highway divider, and entered the westbound lanes of the highway.
An Audi A4, driven by a woman believed to be in her thirties with her two young children as passengers, struck the Honda.
The driver of the Honda, a woman believed to be in her thirties, was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Four patients were assessed this morning at the scene, three of them were transported to hospital,” says Adam Loria, Public Education Officer with EMS.
“Of the three transported to hospital, two children, believed to be between five and ten years of age, and one adult female, believed to be in her thirties, all were transported in serious but stable and non-life threatening condition.”
According to Sgt. Joerg Gottschling of the CPS Traffic Section, unsafe speed relative to the weather conditions is believed to have factored in the crash.
“Some witnesses indicated that her speeds were not unusual for what we consider normal road conditions, but I’m having a difficult time walking on the roads this morning,” says Sgt. Gottschling. “It’s kind of that curling rink, pebbly ice, as a result of our unusual weather conditions with the moist air and the roads are extremely slippery.”
“This no doubt caused (the Honda driver) to lose control.”
Westbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway were closed for nearly five hours while police investigated and crews removed debris from the road.
