Calgary police have arrested a man in connection with a crash that claimed the life of a woman and sent another to hospital.
On July 2, 2016, a Ford Fusion was speeding eastbound on Memorial Drive when it struck the centre median on 5A Street N.W., rolled onto the driver’s side and then onto its roof.
The vehicle then slid across the eastbound lanes of Memorial Drive where it struck a large tree.
Kanaye Renfrew, 30, was the passenger in the front seat of the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 32-year-old woman, who was in the backseat, was taken to hospital in critical condition. She remains in hospital.
Dale Cameron Neisz, 38, the man behind the wheel of the car, was also taken to hospital with serious injuries.
An investigation determined that excessive speed and alcohol were factors in the fatal crash.
Neisz is charged with:
- Criminal Negligence Causing Death
- Criminal Negligence Causing Bodily Harm
- Impaired Driving Causing Death
- Impaired Driving Causing Bodily Harm
- Operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol level exceeding 80mg% (.08), causing death
- Operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol level exceeding 80mg% (.08), causing injury
Neisz was out of the country when the charges were laid and police were able to make contact with him during that time.
His next court appearance is on September 2.
