Calgary police say a man who was taken into custody in connection with a deadly shooting on New Year’s Day has not been charged in the incident and investigators continue to work to determine a motive in the attack.

Police took a man into custody from a home in southwest at about 5:30 p.m. on Thursday and also executed two search warrants at residences in same part of the city.

Investigators say he was an invited guest at the party on New Year's Eve where more than 50 others were in attendance.

CPS Staff Sergeant Chisholm says the suspect remains in custody in connection to an unrelated incident which occurred outside of Calgary. The suspect is not from Calgary and police are unsure of how long he had been in the Calgary area.

“He hasn’t been charged (in the shooting) because we don’t have the evidence to support a charge at this time after consultation with the Crown prosecutor’s office.”

Police were called to a home in the 1900 block of 36 Street S.W. for reports of a shooting at about 5:00 a.m. on January 1, 2015.

Six people were injured in the incident and a seventh, Abdullahi Ahmed, was taken to hospital in critical condition and later died from his injuries.

“It wasn’t random,” said S/Sgt. Chisholm. “We believe it stemmed from an altercation that occurred at the party.”

“We’re really not clear on the extent of the altercation.”

Police have interviewed all of the surviving shooting victims. According to police, some of the victims have been uncooperative with the investigation.

Police have completed the search and collection of evidence from the home where the shooting happened and say a large amount of CCTV footage was seized and is now being reviewed.

“There were over 50 people at that party, there’s definitely more individuals that have not come forward”

Detectives continue to ask anyone who may have been at the party, or in the area at the time to contact police or Crime Stoppers anonymously:
