An affordable housing complex for seniors in the city's northwest is making good progress and will open in the fall.

Lions Village sits on a triangle of land at the intersection of Crowchild Trail and Kensington Road N.W.

The Lions Clubs of Calgary started construction in 2010 with a $10 million federal grant and nearly $5 million in fundraising

The club has owned the property since 1954 and up until a few years ago, 24 tiny bungalows occupied the land.

Seniors who lived in the bugalows were evicted to make room for the new building.

Dottie Laithwaite was one of them and her name is at the top of the list to move back in when the project is complete.

"I think when it's finished it will be nice. They look very neat and every thing that you could want is going to be in them," said Laithwaite.

On Monday the president of Lions Club International was in Calgary to tour the sight.

Wing-Kun Tam says Calgary's Lions Village is a model to the world for how charities can build affordable housing

"I think this is a very good project and I do encourage the rest of the Lions in the world to learn from here and try to help local people in their community,' said Tam.

This year 130 seniors will move in to the 90 unit complex and nine of those units will be dedicated for homeless seniors.

Lions Village will be jointly managed by the Lions Club of Calgary and Bethany Care Society.
