A man was taken to hospital with burns after a house fire in the northwest community of Varsity on Monday.

Around 12:50 p.m., a group of teenagers discovered smoke coming from the front door of a home on Varsity Crescent N.W. and called 911, according to a Monday news release.

Fire crews responded to the scene and searched the home for any occupants. They found a middle-aged man upstairs in a room where the fire originated.

Paramedics assessed the man and took him to hospital to treat burns on his face and hands.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire. The damage was contained to the room the fire originated in, but smoke damage affected the rest of the home.

The home was disconnected from utilities as a precaution. The residents are not able to return at this time.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Calgary Fire Department noted that the home had working smoke alarms that activated after the fire started.
